Richmond
Founded by the Normans in 1071, Richmond in Swaledale, North Yorkshire is a town packed full of character.
Located on the banks of the River Swale, the town grew up around its impressive castle. In the middle ages royal charters were granted giving rights to hold markets and fairs resulting in Richmond becoming an important regional centre.
Later, in the Georgian period, many fine buildings were constructed and when you visit Richmond you'll discover medieval buildings jostling with elegant Georgian facades. Many of the houses built at that time surround the cobbled market place, said to be one of the largest in England with an impressive castle towering over.
Richmond boasts a variety of interesting shops, unusual galleries, lively markets and quality pubs, hotels and restaurants. If you're looking to work up an appetite why not follow the spectacular riverside walks down to the waterfall, known locally as ‘the foss’.
Home of the oldest Georgian theatre in the country, Richmond also has three excellent museums – the Georgian Theatre Museum, The Georgian town hosts Richmondshire Museum and The Green Howards’ Museum.
Richmond also serves as an ideal base for exploring the enchanting Yorkshire Dales.
